”Biting temptation”: An examination of the Eden myth in the Southern fiction of William Faulkner, Alice Walker, and Toni Morrison. $49.99 This study argues that through their use of allusion, William Faulkner, Alice Walker, and Toni Morrison respond to interpretations of the Eden myth that were used to substantiate oppressive practices in Southern culture. Using Ziva-Ben Porat’s definition of allusion, I contend that Faulkner, Walker, and Morrison reopen the myth for reexamination, and, in the case of Walker and Morrison, revise the myth. After delineating the historical uses of the myth to support race and gender hierarchies in Southern society, I discuss Faulkner’s, Walker’s, and Morrison’s allusions to the Eden myth in their novels of Southern experience. Faulkner alludes to the creation and fall in his depiction of Thomas Sutpen of Absalom, Absalom!, whose actions bring Sutpen’s Hundred to fruition and then to ruin. In The Sound and the Fury, Faulkner again alludes to the Eden myth, this time evoking Eve in his rendering of Caddy Compson. Unlike the sociopolitical interpretations of the myth, Faulkner’s employment of the Eden myth underscores the injustice of race and gender oppressions. Based on a single case study, with a longitudinal dimension (study period, 1991–2008), the dissertation examines SANParks transformation through multidisciplinary lens, and analyzes transformation strategies and initiatives related to deracialization, black empowerment, social justice, and people-oriented conservation. Key informant interviews, archival research (documents), observational methods, and official SANParks’ organizational climate survey data set provide the data.;Confronted with increasing pressure to address the apartheid legacy, SANParks responded by reforming and advancing broader objectives of “transformation” in an effort to be legitimate and survive in the new South Africa. The dissertation argues that in the context of broader transformations, political and major policy changes, SANParks’ initiatives were predicated on “enlightened pragmatism” and recognition that its organizational interests are secured through local socio-economic development and advancement of black empowerment. SANParks executives acknowledged that populist demands and societal expectations of the role and functions of national parks had to be tempered by moderation and pragmatism while transcending narrow conservation interests. In the process, SANParks was compelled by pragmatic reasons and “enlightened self-interests” to advance socio-economic initiatives that focus on historically disadvantaged communities living adjacent to national parks. For many teachers, this explanation of their judgment may seem invisible or as “just something I have to do.” In this case study of teacher rhetoric, I listen to one group of teachers explain their judgment to one another in hopes of understanding the knowledge teachers reveal to one another so that those concerned with teacher knowledge might be able to create conditions that facilitate teacher learning. More specifically, as a participant-observer in a National Writing Project Summer Institute, I describe and examine the deliberations between a small group of teachers as they collaborate to craft a response letter to each of the teachers who demonstrate their teaching practices.;This dissertation focuses on what teachers in this response group discuss and deliberate, as well as how individual teachers craft positions of authority and of trusted professional peers. That is, this project employs rhetorical concepts to describe the content of the arguments teachers forward to one another and to describe how those arguments position each speaker with the other members of the group. No doubt he’s had to gradually ease out of some of the most defining traits of his original craft throughout his tenure as Marsmobil; though it began as an amalgam of lounge jazz and electronica in 1999, it fully culminates here with a far-removed, fascinatingly wide-ranging set sporting an abundance of tributaries. This is a tour de force of immaculately mind-bending pastoral pop, with an arsenal of instruments at play and only one finger on the trigger. Early album highlight and single “Crazy Colored Lights” utilizes a neat little tactic of segmenting the words of the title in a fleeting vocal harmony, and cycling them repeatedly as an isolated sonic tidbit floating over the rest — the perfect sonic equivalent of a kaleidoscopic image that does much to set the stage for what follows. One of the album’s two guests also shows up on this track in the form of a spoken word interlude by an entity known as the Illusionists, a strangely riveting out-of-left-field segment on a song that has already done much to ingratiate itself. You could swear that Mark Everett of Eels makes an appearance on the equally strong “Moon of Dust,” but as it turns out the song is intended merely as an “homage to Eels,” and is actually that much more impressive for it. At 16 tracks it would be tempting to assume there’d be some filler here, but this masterwork simply unfolds with nary a dull or derivative moment. It’s tempting to think of it as handing on the baton, but instead it’s really two wonderful vocalists singing as if their lives depended on it — as is the case when they come together again for Khaled’s hit “Aicha.” For their solo spots (Khaled, as the biggest name, gets two), each man gives his party piece, “Ida” for Taha and the hit “Tellement N’Brick” for Faudel (Khaled contributes “Wahrane Wahrane” and an R&B take on his breakthrough “N’ssi N’ssi” that turns it into an Marvin Gaye-goes-rai number). Perhaps inevitably, it’s Khaled, the best-established and best-loved performer, who casts the longest shadow, and Taha, the iconoclast, who seems most in the background, although he does shine given his moments in the spotlight.
